World Mental Health Day 2018 Prize
How are you?
This is a question we rarely ask ourselves.
If someone else asks us, more often than not we say, “Fine!” or “Great!”, which is a typical response around the world — but not always the truth.
On World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2018, I’m asking everyone I know to tell me how they really feel, and I’m listening hard, listening for any tell-tale signs of fatigue, exhaustion or stress.
Remember that old saying, “A problem shared is a problem halved.”?
That means by sharing how you feel, you’re handing over some of that exhaustion and stress to your listener so you can share the burden together; this is also so that the burden is weighing heavily on your shoulders alone.
There is no shame in being honest about feelings of sadness, anxiety or depression — more of us need to speak up sooner, so our friends know we need a little bit of help.
If you’re a bit of a loner, reach out to those around you and suggest grabbing a coffee, a meal, going out to an event — or if you’re a home lover, reach out to your friends on Zoom and Skype so you can have a coffee or a cocktail together. We need friendship, we need laughter, we need to feel a sense of wellbeing from being in touch with the people we cherish xox
The Prize
The prize for reaching out is to fill your heart with joy and friendship, love and community, and to feel part of something bigger than yourself. xox
