How to Create a Style and Font Guide for your business

When we start a new venture, new business, new creative endeavour, we are so excited to get started building and then finding clients, students, collaborators etc.

One step which can sometimes be forgotten, is to decide what our “style” will be for the business, which can include many things, for example:

  1. which types of business documents will we create? Letters, invoices, receipts, emails etc?
  2. which font will we use for Headings? typeface and size?
  3. which font will we use for smaller headings? typeface and size?
  4. which font will we use for the Body of text – other types of text? typeface and size?
  5. which font/s will we use for Signatures? typeface and size?
  6. which font/s will we use for the website? typeface and sizes etc?
  7. what will our logo look like, and how many sizes will there be? some will be required for high quality printing, others will be smaller and suitable for emails and texts etc
  8. which photos of ourself or staff will be used for business documents?
  9. which avatars/sketches of staff will be included, and for which types of documents?
  10. Which colour palette will we use as our “brand colours”? What are their Colour Codes and what do those colours look like?
  11. if we make videos (e.g. on YouTube etc) what will the intro and outro be? which logo will we use? is there an audio file or music file which must be included? is there a separate Style Guide for Videos? The quick answer is, “Yes!” :D

These are just a few of the questions we need to ask ourselves, and the sooner we do this the better it will be – it can be called a Brand Style Guide or a Style and Font Guide, or something else which makes sense for you. It will show consistency, and professionalism across all your business documentations etc.

Whenever a new staff member is hired, or a person joins under contract for a period of time, it’s essential to share this document with them.

Here is an example of ONE page of ONE of my Style Guides, to give you an idea about the type of document I share when I engage additional staff or online Support throughout the year (additional pages will include many of the other options in the list above):
