What is YouTu-be?

The YouTube Organisation owns the domain name “youtu.be”, don’t be alarmed.

Hello there Dogo! Thank you for reaching out to ask this question.

After a video is uploaded to YouTube, it is given a second “link” which is on the “youtu.be” domain name.

This means every video on YouTube has TWO links:

1. the normal YouTube link
2. and the shorter “Youtu.be” link.

Why are there two YouTube links?

The simplest answer is:

1. one link is long
2. one link is short
3. both go to the same video :-)

What is the difference between YouTube and Youtu.be?

There is no difference:

1. one link is long
2. one link is short
3. both go to the same video :-)

 

Where and How to Find Youtu-be links

Go to the video on YouTube – it will look similar to this image below:

In the image above we can see a video on YouTube (yes, it’s one of mine :D).

1. at the top of the image is the actual YouTube link for this one video
2. at the bottom of the image is the SHARE button (see the pink arrow)
3. once the Share button is clicked, a pop-up window appears, as shown in this next image

The LINK shown on the Share pop-up (image above) shows the YOUTU.BE link for the video.

• notice that the Link NUMBER matches in both images.

Why does YouTube create Youtu.be short links?

Excellent question!  The simple answer is that the Youtu.be links are SHORT LINKS (also known as short URLs), so that they have fewer characters in them.

These are great when posting on Twitter etc where a shorter link is the better option.
