If I change an unlisted YouTube video to public, will the URL change?
When Sonia reached out and asked, “If I go from unlisted to public on my YouTube video, will the URL change?”, I was able to let her know immediately she need not worry.
The answer is, “No, the URL will NOT change.”
When a YouTube video is marked as “Unlisted”, it means:
- the video will not be visible on the Channel
- it can only be seen by people you share the link with
- no-one can find it without the link
- the link can be shared with others
- the video can be viewed by people who have the link, but don’t have a YouTube account.
When a YouTube video is marked as “Public”, it means:
- the video can be found by anyone online searching for the keyword phrases or tags
- the video will now appear with other videos on that YouTube Channel
- the video can be watched by anyone and everyone.
Why do some YouTube Users mark their videos as “Unlisted”?
- they want the video to be hidden from people visiting their YouTube Channel
- it might be part of a training course
- it might be part of an online private video Challenge or marketing Challenge etc, and needs to be kept private for a period of time
- it might be open for reviews by a team or group of people, to be watched and critiqued before going “live”
- and it could be for many other reasons.
