Remember the island I moved to 10 days ago?

I’m loving it! Still waiting for Broadband to be connected (next week) and mobile phone has practically NO reception, but my surroundings are beautiful, the community is friendly, and I love taking ferries! (Remind me of that in winter when I’m drenched to the bone after a rough ferry crossing :-)

So how am I accessing the internet, you ask? Well here’s what I do …

Remember the island I moved to 10 days ago? My iphone screenOn my iPhone, I:

  1. go to the Home screen
  2. tap SETTINGS
  3. select the fifth option — PERSONAL HOTSPOT
  4. click the slider so it turns GREEN for ON
  5. go to my laptop
  6. select WIFI icon in the top right menu area
  7. choose the name of my “hotspot” (I read the name on the iPhone)
  8. type the password (shown on the iPhone Hotspot screen too)

Voila! I’m all set!

As I changed phone/internet carriers to be on this island, I got an extra 25GB on my smart phone, so that I can do a lot of internet work while I wait the 2 weeks for the broadband access via my new land line.

You can access the smart phone :

  1. over WIFI or
  2. via the USB plug from phone to laptop

You can do this whenever you have both your phone and laptop together.

“Can anyone else access my smartphone wifi?”

No — they need the unique password, and the only way they can get that is if you give it to them.

So this is how I’m able to work on my laptop by using my iPhone.

Please note:  the iPhone battery runs out much faster when it’s being used for wifi.

It’s not fabulous, but it’s allowing me to get a lot of things done — it’s a bit tricky uploading images, or attaching images to emails, Facebook etc, but I just try again.

It’s definitely not good for uploading videos, so I’m holding off on that until the 28th April — fingers’ crossed!
